The economy of the county of Cluj draws from rich material resources, a good geographic location, and easy access on railroad and highways. The county has a highly skilled labour force, experienced in many fields, having remarkable potential to adjust to free market requirements, thanks to the excellent institutions of education and training at all levels, as well as the scientific research and technologic development centres therein.
By the end of 1997, the county of Cluj had 46 public enterprises, branches and subsidiaries thereof, 251 state-owned companies and 27,592 private companies. In addition, there were 14,687 private entrepreneurs, out of which 3,813 family businesses and 10,876 individual businesspersons. At that same time, the number of foreign investors was 2,240, and their invested capital was worth USD 110.1 million. They mainly originated in Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, France, etc.
Industry
Industry is the most important part of economy. Over 34% of the employed labour force are working in industrial branches. The most important industries represented here are:
Agriculture
Farming land The soil and the climate have favoured the development of agriculture; animal breeding is a very important branch thereof. Many fruit orchards were created on slopes, especially in the center, the north and the north-eastern part of the county, around Cluj, Baciu, Apahida, Huedin, Unguras, Nires, Bobalna, Dej, etc. Existing construction materials and industrial processed materials have enabled the development of the industry of construction materials. The woods, covering 154,582 ha (23.2% of the county area) have been directly related to the development of many industries, especially in constructions. A diverse and rich tourism potential is worth noting - especially the one in the Apuseni Mountains, including good possibilities for developing related activities, within the process of restructuring and privatization of the county economy.
Agriculture is the second most important branch in the county economy. Over 27% of the employed labour force work in the field of agriculture. The total farming land area is 667,291 ha, out of which the worked land is 202,130 ha. Forests cover 169,291 ha.
